Whither the pathfinder?
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s grip on the political machine in Lagos State had been almost wholly unquestioned since his emergence as governor of Lagos State in 1999.
Indeed, perhaps only Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo of all those who won elective office in 1999 continues to claim the kind of political relevance that Tinubu holds in the polity; that is of all those who political actors who won elective office at the commencement of the Fourth Republic in 1999.
Whereas the Obasanjo phenomenon comes from the clout he easily musters in the international community and the strategic linkages from 11 years as Head of State, Tinubu has used Lagos as a spring board to build a political empire extending across the country.
In 2015 Tinubu’s political wizardry was a significant factor in the first loss of power by a ruling political party in the nation’s history at the federal level.
His national reach was, however, not at the expense of his firm hold on Lagos.
A move by associates of the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to trudge an independent path (a strange path it was alleged) in the period leading to the 2011 elections was decisively suppressed. Even another alleged attempt by the same associates to inspire another buddy of Fashola’s, Supo Sasore into the 2015 governorship election was deflated at the sight of the Tinubu political machine. Both previous attempts at political rebellion, remarkably, did not lead to the division of the house.
That is until the recent attempt at mutiny that led to the unprecedented factionalisation of the APC State chapter with the formation of a parallel executive as against that sanctioned by Tinubu. It is an unprecedented move against the famed tactician the man that finds the path for Lagos.
