Falcons hit Abidjan for WAFU

Eight-time African champions the  Super Falcons arrived in  Abidjan  on Monday ahead of  the 2018 WAFU Cup of Nations which begins on Wednesday.

According to spokesman for  the Nigeria Football Federation  Ademola Olajire, the team’s new coach Thomas Dennerby led the Nigerian delegation consisting of 21 players,  assistant coaches Wemimo Mathew and Maureen Mmadu to the Ivorian capital for the  maiden championship scheduled to end on February  24.

Veteran Bayelsa Queens midfielder Osarenoma Igbinovia, Joy Jegede, Rasheedat Ajibade (Robo Queens), Chioma Wogu (Rivers Angels), Amarachi Okoronkwo (Nasarawa Amazons), Glory Ogbonna (Ibom Angels), Kemi Famuditi (Confluence Queens) and Anam Imo (Nasarawa Amazons) top the list of the squad for the tournament.

Also in Abidjan are Ihuoma Onyebuchi (Sunshine Queens), Peace Efih (Edo Queens),  Ogechi Ukwuoma (Delta Queens), Mary Ologbosere (Rivers Angels), Chiamaka Nnadozie (Rivers Angels), Chinaza Uchendu (Rivers Angels) and Aminat Yakubu (Bayelsa Queens).

The  Falcons open their WAFU campaign against Benin  at 4pm on Thursday. They face  Senegal on Saturday and  engage Togo on Monday.

Mmadu told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that their aim was to get to the final and possibly win the tournament.

She said the Falcons understand the task ahead of them and would do their best to win all the matches.

The former international said, “We are going there to do our best. The players are in high spirits and are also ready for the task ahead.

“Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to female football. So, we will take each match as it comes with the aim of getting to the final and if possible win the title.”
